Born in Brownsville, Texas, John Hunter has performed with many of the regional orchestras and is an extremely in-demand performer and teacher in the DFW Metroplex. He is currently principal bass of the Corpus Christi Symphony for the 25-26 Season. He has also been invited to perform with include Fort Worth Symphony, Dallas Opera, Dallas Symphony, Dallas Chamber Symphony, Richmond, Memphis, Arkansas, Shreveport, Tulsa and National Philharmonic in Washington DC.

John was a winner of the UT Arlington Concerto Competition, where he performed Giovanni Bottesini’s Concerto #2 in B minor for Double Bass and Orchestra. He has also attended festivals such as Brevard Music Center, PRISMA, Aruba Symphony Festival, Music In The Mountains, and National Music Festival and has performed with members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra alongside Pinchas Zukerman as part of their collaboration with Southern Methodist University’s Chamber Music Program. Recently, John has also been performed with the Earspace Ensemble as a guest at Southern Methodist University for a world premiere.

An active teacher for students in middle school, his students have recently been receiving praise and obtaining high chairs in their respective all-region orchestra as well as the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra. He teaches all over the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and recently became adjunct faculty at Abilene Christian University.

John has studied with notable teachers such as Brian Perry, Jack Unzicker, Tyler Shepherd, Paul Unger, Katherine Decker, Clif Evans and has performed in classes for Paul Ellison, Ed Barker, Craig Brown, Daniel Tosky, George Speed, Alex Hanna, Hal Robinson and many others.  He holds a bachelor’s in music education from UT Rio Grande Valley, Masters in Music from UT Arlington and a Performance Certificate from Southern Methodist University.

During his spare time, John is an active marathon runner as well as a huge foodie. He loves to try and eat food with his friends and his favorite pastime is to try new coffee shops.
